Arcana X 2nd Assignment: Bitter Suites to Succubi!! Chapter 2!!

Arcana symbol (3)

In her room, Beatrice is checking over her armor and weapons. She looks over her armor fixed over a mannequin. It has been polished to a pristine finish. She spots the right shoulder guard out of place and adjusts it to its correct position. Then she carefully examines her armor for any more imperfections. Presentation is everything when one is a symbol of authority. Beatrice followed this practice to the letter. The lesson her father installed in her. Beatrice and Willow’s father was a knight for the kingdom of Zanadour and had groomed his daughters for knighthood since he had no sons. Beatrice took up her father’s lessons while Willamina struggled even with the basics. Though disappointed, their father did not abandon Willamina. Instead, he changed his tactics and trained her for a supportive role. Rowland, their father, discovered Willamina had a natural knack for medicine. He taught her how to concoct various kinds of medicines. Beatrice reflects for a moment on the gentleness he showed Willamina and the sternness he bestowed upon her. Rowland was relentless with her. His lessons were nearly beat into her but Beatrice was just as relentless, taking whatever punishing tutorials her father dished out. And those harsh lessons paid off. She now out ranked her father then. Rowland would be proud if he saw her now.
Once her armor checks out, Beatrice takes up her sword. Facing the large mirror on the wall, she watches herself as she unsheathes her sword, checking her technique. She straightens her arms in front of her and draws the blade while casting a fierce gaze. It’s an intimidating pose. Beatrice returns the weapon to its scabbard. She then adjusts her stance and holds the sword out again, this time raising it to her eye level. Methodically, she draws it, casting a gaze that just as sharp as the blade’s edge. She sheathes the sword and switches her stance again. Beatrice did this often, checking her form while sheathing and unsheathing her sword from various stances. She is always vigilant. She does not want her enemies, or her peers, to think of her as another weak woman. If she presents herself as a formidable opponent, those who face her will see her as a worthy challenge. Though, Beatrice’s beauty does have a tendency to throw off her adversaries who also have a tendency to stare directly at her bust.
Beatrice fluidly goes through a series of swords maneuvers, periodically checking her posture. If something is off by the smallest margin, she will curse herself before making the correction. So far, her technique is flawless as always. Satisfied with her form, she continues running through her swordplay techniques this time with sharper moves. Beatrice soon becomes lost in her shadow sword play. Doing this is stimulating to her where for other knights it would be a chore. Her father has trained her in various styles of swordplay. She excelled and her sword is now an extension of her body. Stimulated in her rehearsal, Beatrice nearly fails to notice that Amanda has entered the room when she comes around with a fast slash. She pulls the strike at the last possible second while Amanda quickly throws her body back, staring wide eyed at the blade that comes dangerously close to her chest. The encounter surprised and shocked both women. Beatrice and Amanda take a moment to collect themselves as they try to catch their breaths and calm their racing hearts.
“Amanda, by His Grace, what do you think you’re doing?” Beatrice shot at her.
“I’m sorry, Milady! I didn’t know you were practicing,” said Amanda who is still trying to calm down from nearly losing her head.
Beatrice is taken aback. Practicing? That word is used only to describe a novice. She is a High Captain of Arcana Knights. How dare she use a lowly word such as that in reference to her. “Practicing? Did you just say I was…practicing?” she says sternly.
Realizing her mistake, Amanda quickly apologizes. “Ah! No, Milady! I-I meant checking your form which is as beautiful and graceful as you are, Your Ladyship,” she says, flailing her hands. She is well aware of the harsh punishment High Captain Ashcroft can mete out on those who offend her. Hopefully, Amanda hasn’t offended her.
“Well then, do not make that mistake again, Miss Blayke,” Beatrice said calmly as she sheaths her sword. “Now what do you have to report?”
“Miss Willow and Ecks have been sent to Tulpaar Village in Eshtar,” Amanda told her.
“Tulpaar Village? I thought they severed ties with us.”
“They did but a messenger from the neighboring village Tulpex arrived with a letter earlier today. His Grace believes the letter was sent without the Tulpaar Regal District’s knowledge.”
“It must be bad if someone went over the heads of the Regal District. Perhaps I should—”
“However, you have an assignment from His Grace, Milady. Tensions between the Steamists and the Alchemists have begun to rise again and Sir Marik Quentin, Head of the Regal District in Msyt, has requested a representative from Arcana Kingdom. And His Grace has decided that you would be the best candidate since you managed to calm things down between them before.”
“Not to mention the fact that they’re nothing but a bunch of womanizing bureaucrats,” Beatrice says with contempt. The last time she went to Myst to settle things between the Steamists of Myst and the Alchemists of Eshtar City, the arguing men quieted down once Beatrice entered the Council Hall and ogled her the whole time she spoke. Normally she would trounce a man for even thinking about looking at her disrespectfully but she could not display such action since her trip was diplomatic. Beatrice sighs, disgruntled at the thought of dealing with those despicable maggots again. “Well, if I am to go to Myst, I will need to look my best. Amanda, I need to go to Syrus and pick up my formal dress from the seamstress at Odine’s Wardrobe Shop,” she says.
“Yes, Milady,” replies Amanda.
Her subordinate sets to leave when Beatrice adds, “On foot.”
Shocked, Amanda looks back at her superior. “On foot, Milady?” she asks.
“I do not believe I hesitated, Miss Blayke,” Beatrice said firmly, crossing her arms. “And I want the task completed in an hour.”
“Lady Beatrice, no disrespect, but it takes two hours to travel to Syrus and back,” Amanda started to protest.
Beatrice cuts her off. “Then I suggest you make haste,” she says calmly. “This is what you get for saying I need practice.”
Amanda stares at her superior wide-eyed. The trip to Syrus form Arcana Kingdom and back again takes two hours on foot. On horse, the travel is severely cut to about forty minutes. Ecks has made the trip on Serenity in fifteen minutes. Beatrice wants her to make the two hour in half the time. This is harsh even for her, Amanda thought. She’d never dare say such a thing out loud for the sake of being given a harsher punishment. Amanda sighs heavily and says, “As you wish, Milady.”
“Good,” said Beatrice, “By the way, you now have fifty-eight minutes.”
Amanda jumped back. She has wasted time just thinking about the trip to Syrus. She should’ve remembered that Beatrice starts timing her immediately. Not wanting to waste any more time, she runs out of the room and sprints down the hall, almost knocking a young female over in her haste. Amanda quickly excuses herself without stopping. The young pink haired knight watched Amanda as she disappears around the bend before continuing to Beatrice.
“Lady High Captain Ashcroft,” she greeted with a bow of her head.
“Yes, what is it?” Beatrice replied.
The pink haired knight tells Beatrice that a delivery man from Odine’s Shop in Syrus had dropped off her dress. Beatrice looks at her questionably until she remembers one minor detail. “Oh right, I was having that delivered today,” she says. She realizes the mistake she made and had basically sent Amanda on a goose chase. Rather than send someone to retrieve her, she lets the matter be. Beatrice takes her dress and thanks the knight for her service. “Oh well, she can use the exercise,” she says and then closes the door.
