Cosplay Spotlight: AllieCat Cosplay

Tyrande 2

From the night comes AllieCat Cosplay’s COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT!!

Why do you cosplay?

I cosplay as a way to keep myself constantly challenged as an artist and find it both educational and creative to find new ways to recreate costumes/weapons/objects from basic materials into works of art.

What was your first cosplay?

This was my first cosplay, Tyrande Whisperwind from World of Warcarft.

Do you make your own cosplay costumes, if so, which ones, and how long does an average costume take to make?

My Tyrande cosplay is all handmade by me, having received help from a fashion designer with the dress but sewn together by the both of us and it took a dedicated two weeks to get it all done.

What is your favorite character to play?

Tyrande is my favourite so far being my only cosplay but I have a new character Lylyth, Shadow of Everblight in the works that I think might be a little more fun since it’s a full suit of armor. =P

Amongst animation, comics, movies, or video games, what is your biggest inspiration for cosplay?

Working as a CG Animator professionally within the BC TV/Film industry, I’d have to say animation haha. I get to work with creative individuals everyday who are all talented in different ways and seeing the mass collaboration of painters/animators/sculptors/writers/designers work together to create a movie, TV show, video game, etc is truly inspiring.

Have you ever made any mistakes that you’d warn a first timer about?

Definitely. When starting a project, make sure you get as much reference as possible. Reference, Reference, REFERENCE! Get all the tutorials you can and watch them or read book/blogs and never ever be afraid to ask others for help. It could save you a lot of trouble/money down the road.

Are there certain characters that are easier to cosplay as than others?

I want to say that fabric cosplays are easier to make but even that is a craft all its own, every cosplay has it’s own level of difficulty but I’d say it depends mostly on the cosplayer themselves based on their strengths and what they like or don’t like to do. Armor making is more challenging to some while others find it fun and easy, just like sewing is challenging for some yet others find it easy. My best advice to is try them both and see what is a better fit for you! Myself I find armor and weapons/props fun but cringe at the thought of having to sew haha. Happy cosplaying!
