WARNING: DO BE CAREFUL OF SPOILERS!!
Theo kills two US Marshalls and frees Duncan. Ryan tells Joe about the death of Arthur Strauss. Ryan and Mike investigates the murder of two US Marshalls who were transporting Duncan to prison. Nick Donovan returns a director pending Mendez’s investigation. Ryan and Mike get break in their tracking of Theo. They head to the apartment of Luis Serra where they find several men brutally murdered. Meanwhile, Max investigates the breach of the FBI at the cyber company that services the bureau where Theo seemingly works. Luis catches the news about the investigation and tries to leave only to stopped and captured by Duncan. Fearful that he is close to being found out, Theo hacks into the cyber company’s computer to frame an employee named Peter Collins. However, another employee named Ted may still be able to expose Theo when he shows Max a picture of him with Peter. Theo kills Ted and nearly kills Max but is forced to flee when local police arrive. Ryan and Mike find Duncan and Luis at a warehouse. Ryan kills Duncan and asks Luis about the latest fake passport he just printed with a picture of Tucker, who owns the cyber company. Back at headquarters, Ryan believes that Tucker has been framed but Nick Donovan shoots his theory down. At his home, Tucker is paid a visit by Theo.
I’m going to sum this up as so:
PRO: Theo, Strauss’ best pupil, proves to be very challenging and able to keep himself two steps ahead of the FBI. He is cold and calculating, reminds me a bit of Shockwave. Theo is very tedious about sticking to the shadows like a ninja. What is really creepy about his guy is that he has a family, wife and two daughters. What’s scarier than him coming home after sullying his hands with blood and calmly lying down with his girls is that he may likely have little to no love for his “family.” Nick Donovan returns to give Ryan Hardy a hard time after having his right eye gouged out in the first season. He still sees Ryan as a loose cannon and will shut him down anytime he has the right idea.
CON: Lack of originality. The season has played out so far like a long running episode of CSI and now CSI: Cyber. This is a curveball from what made the series so interesting in the first place. Cult followers, the elaborate and, at times, elegant murders, and the intoxicating charisma of Joe Carroll. All of which have been nonexistent this season. Mark Grey proved somewhat interesting at the start of the season with his fractured psyche struggling to cope with the death of his family. But that has died out quickly and he pretty much became comedy relief. Arthur Strauss could’ve provided the flare that was needed to light the fire but he was extinguished before he got the chance.
OVERALL: Not enough Joe Carroll. He has become the likeable villain and a key character. Without him, the Following is like a meatless cheesesteak. It ain’t good without the main ingredient. Now that his execution has been updated to take place in a few days, there just might be a small glimmer of hope for the season (and renewal for next year) when, if at all, Theo frees Joe Carroll.
