Man of Tai Chi (2013)
Director: Keanu Reeves
Running Time: 105 minutes
Genre: Martial Arts, Action
This “multilingual narrative”* is an action packed, martial arts film directed by and starring Keanu Reeves (his directorial debut). The film also stars a good friend of his, Tiger Hu Chen. Tiger plays himself in this fictional movie about a secret fighting club in Hong Kong; a violent gathering that boasts no rules. Keanu’s character, Donaka Mark, is the head of a successful security corporation, a company that serves as a cover for a more lucrative business… The underground business of fighting to the death. Donaka recruits individuals, fighters, who aren’t fully aware of what this involvement entails; an exclusive event only open to the rich and few who bet on brawlers, and with survival most definitely not assured. Tiger is an innocent student of tai chi simply taking up an opportunity set into motion by Donaka, and he risks even his honor for the chance to be the best.
Here’s my take. The good: the fighting sequences are superb; Keanu Reeve’s character is a man of few but firm words which works well for this movie; predictable, which is acceptable as there aren’t any large plot holes or ridiculous flubs; very well-paced; and certainly action packed. I don’t really have any complaints about it although I could offer up what a more critical person would suggest: there are some one-liners that are quite obvious and there are those who hate this methodology however, if it works, I say go for it! The larger percentage of viewers love quotable lines.
Um…did I mention the fighting sequences were really, really good?!
Some fun facts: Tiger has been around for some time and has conducted stunts in Matrix Reloaded, Matrix Revolution, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This movie has only officially been released in China but as soon as you can get a peek of this excitement – do so!
P.S.: If John Woo digs this film; the minimum requirement would be to check it out!
