Cosplay Spotlight: Margot la Rue

Make way for Margot la Rue our guest in this week’s glorious COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT!!!!!

Why do you cosplay?

For the same reason a painter paints or an actor acts.  I need to.  I will see a costume and NEED to make it.  It will eat at me until i start working.

What was your first cosplay?

Ryo Bakura from the first season of Yu-Gi-Oh. I was hesitant to spend the time and money on making a big costume so I did something simple in case I did not like cosplay.

Do you make your own cosplay costumes, if so, which ones, and how long does an average costume take to make?

When I started I only altered clothes I found but now I make everything from scratch. I have been sewing since I was a kid so it was not hard to start making everything. The time I take on each one depends on how complicated they are and can take anywhere from 5- 50 hours.

Who is your favorite character to play?

Sakura Haruno from Naruto Shippuden.  I have always found her the easiest to be.  She is so much like me that I don’t have to ‘Play’ her.  I can just be myself.

Amongst animation, comics, movies, or video games, what is your biggest inspiration for cosplay?

I am inspired by a lot of things, but right now Naruto is a big influence. I still have a few variations of Sakura that I want to cosplay as well as a few other characters.

Have you ever made any mistakes that you’d warn a first timer about?

Don’t be intimidated by other cosplayers. No matter what, there will always be someone better. What matters is doing YOUR best work, not THE best work. Cosplay takes practice.  Being very bad at something is the first step to being very good.

Are there certain characters that are easier to play than others?

I have trouble with characters who are super outgoing. I’m not a shy person but I am introspective.  I prefer to watch others rather than be the center of attention when in a large group. Naruto has been the hardest for me personality wise. Being the center of attention all the time is exhausting. I think that is why I like to be Sakura so much. I can shift from main focus to the sidelines whenever I want.
