Cosplay Spotlight: Caribean Sera

Read about Caribean Sera, the new entry to our COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT!!!!!

Why do you cosplay?

I like to think of myself as a “Creativity Specialist” It’s the only working title that I could think of that covers everything I do, As for why I cosplay, It allows me to become a new person entirely for a day.  You put on the costume and you become the character, that’s the actress part of me.  The best part is that sometimes I get paid to do what I love.

What was your first cosplay?

Sleeping Beauty at my Senior Prom, my daddy actually helped me make it and he taught me how to sew.

Do you make your own cosplay costumes, if so, which ones, and how long does an average costume take to make?

I make the majority of my costume, sometimes, there are skills that I just don’t have, so I will buy certain objects or have my big bro make something for me.

What is your favorite character to play?

I would have to say it’s a toss up between Slave Leia of Star Wars fame, and SweetPea from SuckerPunch, both strong independent women even though one of them may not exist at all.

Amongst animation, comics, movies, or video games, what is your biggest inspiration for cosplay?

Definitely movies, I really can’t get into anime, I do like comic books as well and video games are fun too.  So I guess it’s everything but anime, the characters, in my opinion are made for teenagers and I haven’t been one of those in years.

Have you ever made any mistakes that you’d warn a first timer about?

Discover wigs!!!  When I first started I just used the hair I had, and I went to SDCC as Number 6, people recognized the dress, but not the character, I needed a blonde wig desperately, but lesson learned and hopefully passed on.

Are there certain characters that are easier to play than others?

Slave Leia is fairly easy once you get the costume right.  I’ve seen girl rock the Sookie Stackhouse at cons and I’ve seen my share of Bella Swans too.  I must admit that I have used both other those costumes for photo shoots, but never to a con.  Slave Leia, though, I wear her with pride to almost every con.

Is there any advice you want to give to new cosplayers or people too shy to cosplay?

Let your costume be your shield.  Once that first person wants to take a photo of you, all that shyness melts away.  But start with a character you know well so you can do the poses for the camera and practice those poses until you get it right.
