Last month at Bit Gen 8 in Baltimore, we got the chance to talk with K-Murdock, one of the two members of the critically acclaimed group Panacea and producer for the nerdcore superstar MegaRan. After a crazy performance on stage with MegaRan, here’s what he had to say to us:
– How did you get your start as a DJ/Producer?
I am actually a producer first, and really don’t consider myself a DJ by “DJ” standards, as I think of myself when I perform as a glorified hype man/music director, lol. But I got started doing music in college – many moons ago, so its been about 15 years!
– Where do you get your inspiration for you music?
I used to write on my MySpace page – remember that? Ha! – that my music inspiration came from the things in my life and that’s very true – perfect example is that i got caught up doing video game remixes when pretty much gaming & hip-hop were the 2 constant passions i had growing up. It’s come full circle that now i make part of my living flipping these same game samples i grew up off of. Plus, I can always tell you what i was doing in my life based on the game i was playing at a certain time – weird!
– You are apart of a hip-hop group called Panacea. Could you tell me a little bit about the group?
Panacea is my baby. I started the group junior year of college with 4 friends, but that incarnation ended in 2000. I met my current partner and the group’s emcee, Raw Poetic- from Philly (whoop whoop) – in 2003 and we been rolling ever since. We got signed to the fabled Rawkus Records, dropped some critically acclaimed records and collaborated & toured with some heroes of ours, and kept it all progressive. I best describe the Panacea stuff as A Tribe Called Quest meets Final Fantasy. Listen to see if you agree – http://listn.to/panaceanmusic
– Recently, you performed at PAX Prime and at the Halo 4 Global Championship. How was that experience?
Incredible! Dream come true type stuff – not only rocking as a headliner in Seattle at PAX, but the icing on the cake was performing at the Halo Global Championships 2 days later, Man. Microsoft treated us like rock stars and we even got to a remix of a commissioned Halo song before the finals started with thousands watching online! The true fun was AFTER we performed and then we became spectators watching guys game for $200,000! Crazy!
– Are there any future projects that you’re working on?
I got a few side & solo projects in the works – but the project I’m currently hyped to release is Forever Famicom DLC 3 – dropping later this Fall with Mega Ran. We flipped Batman, Bubble Bobble, Shadowgate and Street Fighter 2; Very excited about the way its coming out. You can preview/pre-order it at: megarankmurdock.bandcamp.com

Forever Famicom DLC 3 – the follow-up to MegaRan and K-Murdock’s album Forever Famicom – will be coming this November!!!
– Finally, where can we find your music?
Aside from the aforementioned links above, the best place to hear my stuff would be: the-sound-samurai.com
