5 Questions with… Editor/Writer/Teacher Jim Higgins

1) On what project are you currently working?

I’m working on writing a top secret graphic novel for a publisher that’s new to the comics world. The most that I could say is that there are three separate stories that take place in the past, present, and future of two imagined and linked worlds. I also teach comics writing and drawing and will be doing a class on creating myth and fairy tale stories.

2) Whom in your field do you admire most and why?

In the genre comics world, I think that it’s astonishing that Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips keep putting out excellent crime (and the occasional horror) comics. Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men run was incredibly original. In the world of realistic fiction and non-fiction, the Hernandez brothers are still putting out great stories after 40 years.

3) How did you get into the comic book field?

I was going to conventions in New York when I lived there, and I eventually met DC/Vertigo editor Lou Stathis who had written some articles for a magazine I’d worked for, too. When he was looking for an assistant, he told me to apply. But I also applied for two other positions. I got hired by Andy Helfer to work in the Paradox Press imprint. Part of it was luck, but I also put myself in a position where I met someone in the business and made an impression on him.

4) On which title would you most like to work and why?

I would love to do a flashback series featuring Marvel’s original male Captain Marvel. Jim Starlin’s run on that series was the first group of comics that I loved. I still think they’re amazing and I love the character.

5) On what project will you be working next?

Maybe a creator owned story.
