After a more than a year since it was announced in 2019, Netflix and Mattel Animation have released the first images of the upcoming “Masters of the Universe: Retaliation” series. Many fans have been wondering what Kevin Smith, who is directing the series, will do with the beloved characters. The show is intended to be a sequel to the original 1983 animated series, picking up where that series left off. The first episode revolves around a life-changing battle between He-Man (voiced by Chris Wood) and his lifelong nemesis Skeletor (Mark Hamill), after which the planet of Eternia is left broken and He-Man’s compatriots fractured and estranged. He-Man’s compatriot Teela (Sarah Michelle Gellar) — who undergoes the most dramatic visual update on the series — is tasked with reuniting her old friends in order to save Eternia and the universe.
Netflix has 10 episodes planned that will be divided into two parts. Part One is scheduled to premiere July 23, 2021. Kevin Smith is directing the series and it is animated by Powerhouse Animation Studios, who also worked on Netflix’s Castlevania series.
Unlike the original 1980’s series which was aimed a younger audience, Master of the Universe: Retaliation will be more adult oriented. Kevin Smith drew inspiration for the characters designs from Mattel’s Masters of the Universe toyline. From what the images show, there may even be some inspiration taken from the 2002 reboot series. Opinions are already be formulated about the images, calling out how the new character designs differ from their original designs. Honestly, I see no issue with the new looks. Clearly, the original character designs would appear outdated and so they had to be given a new image. If anything, Powerhouse Animation took what was already there in regards to the characters and enhanced it, making them feel familiar yet fresh. Like other fans, I cannot wait to see who Kevin Smith’s vision turns out. Take a look at the images for yourselves and tell us what you think.
