Why do you cosplay?
Its basically an outlet. I’m a big dork and nerd and I always love finding excuses to dress up. Its nice though to get away from real life once in a while and pretend you’re a super hero or a villain.
What was your first cosplay?
My first cosplay was Yuffie from Final Fantasy Dirge of Cerberus. You’re never going to see pictures of that one haha
Do you make your own cosplay costumes?
Yes about 90% of the time.
If so, which ones, and how long does an average costume take to make?
I’ve made them all except for Phoenix, Black cat, and Domino (though I made Black Cat’s mask and I do all of my own makeup for Domino) depending on how intricate the costume is it can take me anywhere from a day to a few months (if I’m slacking).
What is your favorite character to play?
Hmmmmm Domino for sure. Its not everyday you can be a badass with guns.
Amongst animation, comics, movies, or video games, what is your biggest inspiration for cosplay?
It used to be video games but recently I’ve been more into comics. I guess its tied though.
Have you ever made any mistakes that you’d warn a first timer about?
If you’re wearing contacts, REMEMBER TO CARRY EYE DROPS. Also if you have a strapless top remember you’re walking around a con. Its okay to add clear straps. I’d rather have inaccuracy than a wardrobe malfunction.
Are there certain characters that are easier to play than others?
Oh absolutely. That’s like comparing a Mary Jane costume to a Lady Deathstrike. But with the simple costumes its also really easy to get too lazy and mess it up. For example: wolverine is a pretty simple costume but I’ve honestly seen a handful that have impressed me.
Is there any advice you want to give to new cosplayers or people too shy to cosplay?
As funny as this sounds just be yourself! Be confident and just have fun. There are way too many people who takes cosplay seriously and in the end they end up quitting. Also remember everything you wear at a con can and probably will end up on the internet. I’ve had a few people bash me and I wasn’t really happy. Its when I finally started to realize that they were all lame anons. It sucks though because I’ve met some wonderful people and even attractive people who gets torn apart on the internet. That being said. Cosplay isn’t supposed to be taken seriously. Its just a hobby. So once you find your groove just roll with it. When you’re looking to do a cosplay do a character you love and can relate to. Find a character that matches your body type and just start out simple. It took me years (I started back in 07 and I’m finally getting the hang of it). Don’t be scared about doing it alone either. I started out all by myself. Now I have the greatest friends I could ever ask for. 🙂
