1) On what project are you currently working?
My writing partner, Mike Dean, and I are currently working on our series Grave Brigade. Issue 1 just funded on Kickstarter (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/superbud/grave-brigade-issue-1), and we’re currently working on the script for issue 5 of the series.
2) Whom in your field do you admire most and why?
That’s a great question. James Tynion IV has consistently released awesome original books and has done some creative things from a business standpoint. Scott Snyder is someone I admire for always fighting to tell the story he wants to tell and putting his all into his books. He’s also been teaching a class through his Substack, passing on his years of experience to the next generation of writers. Brian Michael Bendis is one of my favorite writers and was the first writer I followed from book to book as a teenager. And last, I’d say Jim Zub, who for years has been passing on knowledge on the industry on his website and YouTube channel. It’s been really cool to see his career grow over the last ten years or so, from when I first met him, and I’ve learned a lot about making comics from his website and his panels at New York Comic Con.
3) How did you get into the comic book field?
I’ve been a lifelong comic fan, and I’ve been writing creatively since high school, so it seemed to make sense to put both of those passions together. I studied film and television, with a focus on writing/directing in college, and have a background writing video content. But it wasn’t until 2009 or so that I started to feel like there was a real opportunity to tell original stories (not related to superheroes) and find an audience in comics. Mike and I began working in the comics industry by writing our first comic and deciding to put it out there ourselves. We submitted it to just about every comic book publisher taking submissions at the time, and then used Kickstarter to fund issue 2. We had a lot of success with Kickstarter and, as the platform grew, we realized there was an opportunity to connect with fans of indie comics directly. With modern technology, sites that host comics, and digital printers who can print small print runs, you no longer need permission from anyone to make a comic. If you have an idea you can make it happen on your own.
4) On which title would you most like to work and why?
For the most part, I’ve only been interested in telling original, creator owned stories. The idea of writing a character that’s 60, or even 100 years old seems daunting. I grew up loving Marvel, DC and all of their classic characters, but I’m less interested in writing those comics. So, if I were to pick an existing title to write on, it may be something like Star Wars, where I feel like there’s a little more room to do something different, and you don’t have decades of monthly comics canon to contend with.
5) On what project will you be working next?
The next series we are releasing is called The Last House on Gallows Hill, and it’s an all-ages one shot horror comic about a mysterious house that appears in a small town that only kids can see. When the youngest kid in their crew goes missing, Bobby recruits his friends to enter the scary house and rescue Brett before it’s too late.
