The Animaniacs was one of the most beloved cartoons in the 90s. It followed the zany antics of the Warner siblings – Yakko, Wakko and Dot- as they run loose through Warner Bros studios. The show’s brand of humor appealed to kids and was wittier than Disney’s more straight-laced programming. Well, in 2020, we get to relive those antics in a reboot series that will be heading straight to Hulu. The streaming channel ordered a two season run of the new series and will be adding the original series to its library along with the Animaniacs sister shows- Pinky and the Brain, Pinky, Elmyra and the Brain, and Tiny Toon Adventures. The original series, including spinoffs, were produced by Steven Spielberg. Animaniacs ran for five seasons first on FOX Network and later on the WB. It was essentially a variety show with skits featuring a rotating cast of characters. Pinky and the Brain was a popular enough segment to warrant a spin off series. Coupling it with Batman: The Animated Series ensured that Warner Bros was a major player in television programming.
Hulu will be working with Spielberg for the new Animaniacs, which will be a reboot rather than a revival. No other mention of cast members has been revealed outside of Spielberg. Hopefully, the new misadventures of Yakko, Wakko and Dot will retain the unhinged, outlandish, zany comedy that made the original series so beloved.
