The entertainment world has been rocked by the passing of legendary comedian Gilbert Gottfried, who died April 12. He was 67.
Gilbert Gottfried was known for his shrill voice, squinty eyes and crude humor as a stand-up comedian. His brand of humor was both loved and hated by fans and critics alike. Contrarywise, he is loved for his success as a voice actor in several children’s media as well as television appearances. He has portrayed Mister Mxyzptlk in Superman: The Animated Series, a role he reprised later in Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, Justice League Action, and Lego DC Super-Villains. He also voiced Santa Claus in an episode of Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy, crazed scientist Dr. Bender and his son Wendell in Fairly Oddparents and Peter Griffin’s horse in an episode of Family Guy.
His most recognized role is that of Iago the parrot from Disney’s Aladdin franchise. He first voiced Iago in the original 1992 animated film and reprised the role for Aladdin: The Return of Jafar, Aladdin and the King of Thieves, and the animated series.
Gilbert Gottfried is also known for his role as Mr. Peabody in the Problem Child franchise and was the voice of the Aflac duck before being replaced due to controversial comments he made on Twitter about the 2011 Tohoku tsunami.
Gilbert Gottfried died April 12 in the Manhattan borough of New York City from recurrent ventricular tachycardia that was complicated by type II myotonic dystrophy. Despite his controversies, Gilbert Gottfried made his success as a comedian and actor that has earned him fans the world over. He is unique talent that will never be forgotten.
