Sad news around the Command Center, J1sters. It has been confirmed that Jason David Frank, known for his role as Tommy Oliver in the “Power Rangers” franchise has died. He was 49.
Jason David Frank, known by fans as JDF, was first cast as Tommy Oliver in the first season of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. He was sought after for the role of Adam Steele in VR Troopers before it was given to Brad Hawkins after Frank was called back to Power Rangers. He would portray the character throughout the franchise as the Red Ranger in “Power Rangers Zeo” in 2003, the Black Dino Ranger in “Power Ranger: Dino Thunder” in 2004 and the Green Ranger once again in the final season of “Power Rangers Super Megaforce. Jason David Frank, along fellow “Pink Ranger” Amy Jo Johnson, would have a cameo role in the 2017 “Power Rangers” film. He also expressed interest in doing a White Ranger film or series after an encounter with Stan Lee at a comic book convention. In 2018, he reprised his role as Tommy Oliver in episode 10 of “Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel” for the 25th anniversary of Power Ranger before revealing his retirement from the franchise in 2022.
Outside of Power Rangers, Jason David Frank was also an amateur MMA fighter with black belts in several martial arts styles including Taekwondo, Shotokan Karate, Wado-ryu karate and judo. He held a purple belt in Brazilian Jui-Jitsu and Ajarn degree in Muay Thai. In 2013, JDF portrayed the White Ranger in Bat in the Sun’s “Super Power Beat Down” which pitted the character against Scorpion from “Mortal Kombat” and as the Green Ranger who went up against Ryu from “Street Fighter.” Jason David Frank would voice his character the “Power Rangers” video games – “Power Rangers: The Movie” in 1995, “Power Rangers: Dino Thunder” in 2010 and “Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid” in 2019.
Frank identified as a Christian, and he began attending church after the death of his brother. He married his first wife Shawna in 1994 and the couple had two sons and a daughter. They divorced in 2001. In 2003, he married his second wife, Tammie, and the couple had one daughter. In 2022, Tammie filed for divorce.
Jason David Frank has been loved by Power Rangers fans from his first appearance in the 90s and through to the current generation of fans. He is an amazing actor, incredible fighter and an extraordinary person who will be missed.

Cosplayer and frequent J1 Con guest Eric “The Smoke” Moran had the opportunity to meet Jason David Frank as well as introduce him at a comic convention.
