Matthew Herbert: a Conductor of Sound

If you like music made using sampled sounds, Matthew Herbert’s music should do more than amuse you. Known as Doctor Rockit, Radio Boy, Mr. Vertigo, Transformer, and Wishmountain, Metthew is a British electronic musician. He has pioneered the use of so-called ‘real’, ‘ordinary’ or ‘found’ sounds in modern electronic music. The music page on his website is a great place to check out the wide variety of his sound. My favorite so far is “The mechanics of Destruction.

What makes this artist unique and different from other electronic musicians is his passion for the sound of Big Band music, and the big bands he has formed for use in his productions. In his video, There’s Me And There’s You, Matthew talks about the process and inspiration that went into making the 2008 album, There’s Me And There’s You. He is very driven to express a political message through many of his tracks, using sounds of protesting, MacDonalds wrappers, and even condoms.

Thank you Stephanie M. for introducing me to this unique sound!
