Gods Among Us!! Supernatural S8 Ep16 Recap!!

*WARNING: ADHERE TO THE SPOILERS OR BE SMITED!!*

Zeus (John Novak) whispers in Prometheus (John Reardon) ear. "Is that Axe: Godly Essence cologne you're wearing?"

Prometheus climbed Mount Olympus and stole fire for the humans. As punishment, he was sentenced to a life of immortality. Each day, he would die at sunset. At sunrise, he would return to live only to die again at day’s end. We all know this ancient tale. But what if the tale is reality? Sam and Dean have dealt with ancient gods before and they did so again in last night’s episode. They investigate what is supposed to a zombie when they encounter a man who dies and resurrects each day. Through further questioning, they learn that the man named Shane is actually the Titan champion Prometheus who has kept himself hidden from the Greek Gods for millennia. With no memory of his past, Shane struggles to deal with the fact that he is an immortal. One night, Shane is attacked by a woman who seems to know him. Sam and Dean join the fray where Shane gets the best of the woman. She tells him that he made an enemy of her. The next morning, a woman arrives at the cabin where Sam and Dean were staying. She tells them that she is the mother of his son Oliver. Then she goes on tell them about Shane’s constantly dying and resurrection. Sam discovers that Shane is Prometheus (John Reardon) and the woman that attacked him was Artemis (Anna Van Hooft), the Huntress of the Gods. While they try jogging his memory, Hayley rushed into the room carrying his son. They discover that the son has the same curse as Shane. Back at the storehouse, they formulate a plan to summon Zeus, in the hopes of having him remove the curse or kill him for the same result.

The Huntress of the Gods Atremis (Anna Van Hooft) takes aim.

With the ingredients gathered, they summon forward the King of Olympus. Dean asks to remove the curse. Zeus (John Novak) tells him to release the trap in order for the deal to be reached. However, Dean isn’t so quick to meet the god’s terms. Hayley on the other hand is. She sets the god free where immediately attacks Dean, Sam and Prometheus. The Winchesters attempt to sneak up on Zeus but Artemis is there to save her father. Zeus asks if Prometheus suffered when he experienced his son’s death. The god uses the info from Hayley to his advantage. While he tortures Prometheus, Sam tells Artemis of her relationship with Prometheus hoping to spark any humanity left in the Huntress of the Gods. His speech works as she shows up to save the would-be family. Zeus refuses and his daughter shoots one of her arrows but her father uses Prometheus as a shield. However, Prometheus, to save his son, shoves the arrow through him to kill the King of Olympus.

"Now, where did I park?" Zeus (portrayed by John Novak)

Greek mythology is one of my favorite aspects of the subject. The take on the tale and characters is given a modern twist that works well with the show while staying true to the characters. Zeus is still the King of Olympus who thrives in toying with the lives of mortals. He has been portrayed many times before from movies (Clash of the Titans), to TV (Hercules: The Legendary Journeys), to games (God of War). Here, John Novak does a good job of capturing a god who is manipulative and spiteful. Anna Van Hooft is wonderful as Artemis. The Goddess of the Hunt is a fierce fighter skilled in combat and she has been captured beautifully in this episode. As mentioned earlier, the Winchester’s have encountered the gods before. In the “Hammer of the Gods” episode in Season 5, Sam and Dean had the honor of meeting a hotel full of them with Odin and Balder (both of Norse faith), Kali and Ganesh (Both of Hindu faith), and Mercury (of Greco/Roman belief) in the mix. Episodes like “Remember the Titans” and “Hammer of the Gods” are enjoyable to watch because of the interesting modern take on the gods of old. It’ll be awhile before the Winchesters bust more creatures that go bump in the night but the last couple episodes have given us plenty of interesting possibilities to ponder over in the meantime. Maybe we’ll get to see Castiel come back.
