The neighborhood is getting strange again, J1sters!
Like many of us from the Regan-era, I was excited to see the return of the Ghostbusters (“The Real” Ghostbusters, not that horrid 2016 reboot). Now my excitement is fueled again with the release of the first teaser trailer for the upcoming fifth installment, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.” The film is set following the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife with the Spangler family moving to New York City where they team up with the remaining Ghostbusters to stop a stranger weather phenomenon from bringing about a second Ice Age.

BREAKDOWN: So, anyone else having “Day After Tomorrow” vibes? (LOL) Well, it appears that a weather phenomenon is threatening to turn the Big Apple into a cannoli. Since the Ghostbusters are involved, this will likely revolve around a mythical entity of some kind. There are several deities and spirits revolving around weather, specifically ice storms. The end of the trailer reveals a shadowy figure most likely responsible for putting New York on ice. This figure could be anyone depending upon which lore the film wishes to follow. There’s the Scottish entity Beira, the Queen of Winter, who is also known as Cailleach in Irish folklore; Skadi, the Ice Goddess of Norse mythology and the ever-familiar Yuki-Onna of Japanese folklore to name a few. But let’s bank on it and say that this spirit will be something unique to Tobin’s Spirit Guide. Hey, check out Ecto-1 looking all spiffy with a new roof rack and exhaust tubes. The new GB crew are also sporting new outfits and equipment. The last costume change was when the OG Busters wore dark uniforms in Ghostbusters II and they also had new equipment in that film as well, the Slime Throwers. So hopefully in this film we get to see more new stuff. And in case if you’re wondering about it, this is not the first time as new generation of Ghostbusters has been bred. The 1997 series “Extreme Ghostbusters” features Egon Spangler mentoring a new team of young paranormal investigators and eliminators. Fun fact, the original Ghostbusters show up to help the new kids on the block in the series finale, same as the climax of “Afterlife.” With all of this, I am looking forward the to continuation of this beloved franchise next year!
