G’day gamers and J1 Fans! Once again, your pal DevilDriver1313 has found some news that is “On the NXT LVL!” Gamestop has hired former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime to their board of directors. Fils-Aime stepped down as Nintendo of America president in February 2019 after a ten year run. Set and ready for retirement, he has been called in to help the struggling video game retail chain whose revenue has been on severe decline. The company has been laying off mid-level managers and employees to cut costs, according to a report from Polygon. Reggie Fils-Aime hopes to turn things around.
Joining Reggie on Gamestop’s Board of Directors are William Simon, former CEO of Walmart, and James Symancyk, current CEO and president of PetSmart. Their additions come in the wake of the departure of board members Dan DeMatteo, Gerald Szczepanski, Larry Zilavy, and Steve Koonin walking away.
Gamestop president George Sherman said in an interview, “We look forward to immediately benefitting from their expertise and perspectives as we navigate the evolving gaming and retail environments, execute our strategic initiatives and prepare the company to maximize value-creation associated with the next generation of console launches later this year.”
During his run with Nintendo, Reggie Fils-Aime has overseen the success of several products including the Wii, 3DS and the current top selling Nintendo console, the Switch. He is known for making appearances at E3 and other popular conferences to announce new games coming out.
So, what do you think of this? Can Reggie help turn things around for Gamestop or is it too little, too late for the gaming retail chain and they are put into rest mode?
Until next time, I’ll see you “On the NXT LVL!”
