First “new” Pokémon film in two year to debut in 2020

It has been two years since the last “new” Pokémon film was released with Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution. The Toho 2020 lineup will include a Pokémon film that is not a remake. The film has the working title Pokémon the Movie 2020 which is planned for release in Japan on July 10, 2020.

Following the release of Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us in 2018, there were no new Pokémon animated films. The franchise saw its first live action film, Detective Pikachu, in 2019. The Ryan Reynolds fueled film made $431.7 million worldwide. A modern CGI remake of the first film, Mewtwo Strikes Back: Evolution, was released in 2018 and grossed over $2 billion in Japan with no release outside the country. Everything in the remake fell in line with the original with very few changes other than modifying it for the current Pokémon series’ evolutions.

Currently, there is no further info on what the film storyline is, whether it will be a follow up to Pokémon: I Choose You or set in the current Pokémon series.
