Fate takes aim at Merida and the Dark Swan rises!!

JENNIFER MORRISON

Hey J1 fans and fellow Oncers, I’ve been covering every episode of Once Upon a Time since the start and have loved each and every character that has been introduced in the series. Last season’s Frozen arc, the introductions of Ursula and Cruella De Vil and the return of the Wicked Witch were very creative and gave us a different perspective on these characters. This season sets to keep the pace. When we last left Storybrooke, Emma Swan had sacrificed herself to save Regina and everyone in town when the darkness in Rumplestiltskin’s heart is set loose upon Storybrooke. In the end, the dagger now bears Emma Swan’s name, signifying that she is the new Dark One. Season 5 will follow Emma as she copes with her newly acquired and unwanted role. Most likely, her friends will do what ever they can to save her but they are going to need help. Who exactly? Well, before he died, the Apprentice revealed the only person who can contain the darkness–the sorcerer Merlin. Yes, this season will tackle the legend of King Arthur. This legendary tale has been told countless times over depicting both the fantasy aspect and the actual tale of the 5th century British king. The series will likely cross the two, with references to the animated Disney film “The Sword in the Stone”. There was little doubt this would happen since Lancelot was introduced in the second season. The cast for the Arthurian characters has been chosen. British actor Liam Garrian will portray the legendary king Arthur and Joana Metress is Guinevere. Elliot Knight, who starred in the UK version of Law and Order, has been cast as Merlin.

Amy Manson portrays Merida from "Brave" in the fifth season of Once Upon a Time

Amy Manson portrays Merida from “Brave” in the fifth season of Once Upon a Time

Since Season Three, Once Upon a Time has been dividing the season into two arcs. One of the arcs will follow the 2012 Disney/Pixar film Brave. Scottish actress Amy Manson, known for portraying Alice Guppy in Torchwood, Abby Evans in Casualty, Lizzie Siddal in Desperate Romantics, Daisy Hannigan-Spiteri in Being Human and Medea in Atlantis, will portray the free-spirited Merida. How she will be intergraded into the Once Upon a Time universe could likely be through the King Arthur arc since in the actual account King Arthur defeated the Saxon Empire and established an empire over much of Europe including Ireland. Of course, for this to work, the Scotland setting of “Brave” will have to change. either way, I can’t wait to see what is in store for the main cast and Emma’s fate when Once Upon a Time returns September 27.
