
The anime world has been rocked by the sudden passing of Chris Ayres, best known as the English voice actor of Frieza in the Dragon Ball franchise. He was 54.
Chris Ayres took over the role of the “Emperor of Evil” in Dragon Ball Z Kai in 2010 and has held the role since, voicing him Dragon Ball Super as well as he feature films Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection of F and Dragon Ball Super: Broly. He also portrayed Frieza in the Dragon Ball video games, his final role being in Dragonball FighterZ. Chris Ayres other roles include Corset in Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, Kei Kurono from Gantz, Prince Soma from Black Butler, and Shingen Takeda from the Sengoku Basara series. Prior to voice acting, he was well known as a stage director, choreographer and fight director in the Houston, Texas theater community.
In 2017, Chris Ayres was diagnosed with end-stage COPD and required a double lung transplant. He died October 18 and his sudden passing was posted on Twitter by his partner and fellow voice actor Krystal LaPorte, and his friend and fellow Dragon Ball VA Sean Schemmel, the voice of Goku.
