J1sters, sad news from the world of manga and anime. The official Twitter account for the Berserk series announced today that manga creator Kintaro Miura has passed away due to acute aortic dissection on May 6. He was 54.

Miura was born in 1966 in Chiba City. His career as a manga artist began early with his first manga , entitled Miuranger, being published for his classmate at age 10 in 1977. The series went on to spanning 40 volumes. Two years later, he would create his second series, Ken e no michi (The Way of the Sword). Miura’s skills as an artist improved greatly in middle school and soon he was drawing on a professional level. At age 18, he worked as an assistant to George Morikawa, creator of Hajime no Ippo. Acknowledging Miura’s talent, he dismisses him as his assistant, saying there was nothing more he can teach him.
In 1988, Miura published a 48-page prototype of Berserk in Gekkan ComiComi that placed 2nd at the 7th ComiComi’s Manga-School prize. Berserk was fully realized in 1989 where it began serialization in Hakusensha’s Monthly Animal House before the magazine was renamed Young Animal in 1992. Berserk would go to be Miura’s most famous and successful work. It was adapted into a 25-episode anime in 1997. The follow up anime film series, Berserk: The Golden Age Arc, premiered between 2012 and 2013, with the sequel anime series from Millepensee and GEMBA airing between 2016 and 2017. The 40th volume of Berserk was released in 2018 in Japan, with the latest release of chapter 363 included in the January 2021 issue of Young Animal.
Kintaro Miura died of an acute aortic dissection, the same heart condition that claimed the life of Hiromi Tsuru, voice actress of Bulma Brief in Dragon Ball media.
