Cosplay Spotlight: Shmuberry

Shmuberry, this is your week in our COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT!!

Why do you cosplay?

I see cosplay as my creative outlet! I work in the consumer electronics field so it’s awesome to have something else that I am passionate about when I come home that I can dive into. I love cosplay because it’s so social; most of my closest friends are cosplayers!

What was your first cosplay?

My first cosplay was Tenten from Naruto. I used a pattern to make the top with my mother’s help and the pants were purchases at the thrift shop. I’m still quite proud of that first cosplay, even if today, I have no interest in Naruto anymore.

Do you make your own cosplay costumes, if so, which ones, and how long does an average costume take to make?

Yes! It varies. I’ve made costumes in less than 2 days and others, have taken me over 6 months! For my latest cosplay, Three from Drakenguard 3, I started working on this cosplay back in November before completing a first version of the costume in May. I’m still working on it: I plan on improving the leg armour and adding embroidery to the top.

Who is your favorite character to play?

I don’t really have a favourite; I have cosplay phases! Last year, it was League of Legends so I cosplayed Janna. This year, I’m into cosplaying things I’ve always wanted to cosplay so I’m working on Eternal Sailor Venus and Miki Hoshii from IDOLM@STER.

Amongst animation, comics, movies, or video games, what is your biggest inspiration for cosplay?

Definitely video games and comics. I don’t watch a lot of anime but I liked a few popular ones like Attack on Titan and IDOLM@STER.

Have you ever made any mistakes that you’d warn a first timer about?

Overestimating your skills and how “easy” a project can be. Oh and not ironing your seams. It is sewing 101; it’s very important to open your seams by ironing them but it baffles me that so many cosplayers skip this step! Try it; it will elevate your cosplay!

Are there certain characters that are easier to cosplay as than others?

Characters that you love and are passionate about! It’s easy to get to work and finish a costume for a character that you just can’t wait to wear than a costume for a character that you don’t really care about.
