Cosplay Spotlight: Nicole Oliva

Super Sailor Moon 2014Nicole Oliva, this is your week in our COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT!!

Why do you cosplay?

I am a very artsy and theatrical person and I love to sew a costume and then create and act as that character.  Its like booking yourself all of your favorite lead roles you’ve always wanted.

What was your first cosplay?

Sailor Saturn from Sailor Moon I wore it to the very first New York Comic-con which was my first convention.

Do you make your own cosplay costumes, if so, which ones, and how long does an average costume take to make?

Yes, I make my own cosplays.  The time it takes to make them can vary but most have taken about 3 months.

Who is your favorite character to cosplay?

Its hard to pick just one.  I would have to say my top three would be Diva from Blood+, Princess Tutu, and Sailor Moon.

Amongst animation, comics, movies, or video games, what is your biggest inspiration for cosplay?

Japanese animation or ANIME.

Have you ever made any mistakes that you’d warn a first timer about?

Check the weapons and props policy for conventions and the venue they are being held at before you go.

My Sailor Saturn costume has a large hand made scyth or “Silence Glaive”.  When I went to New York Comic-con I was allowed in because the material was wood and compressed card board.  When I went to a local con called I-con with the same costume and prop weapon I had to leave it at the door before entering certain areas of the venue. Since it was too large to peace tie it to me.

Are there certain characters that are easier to cosplay as than others?

Yes, some are easier just because of the costume design itself and some are easier to portray because they are so much like ones self.
