Cosplay Spotlight: Emy

Show some love to Emy, and welcome her to this week’s COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT!!

Why do you cosplay?

I started cosplaying because some friends talked about it.  They were going to a con and since I like Anime and manga I decided to go and see what kind of event Otakuthon was.  At first, I was really anxious.  But then, I girl came and told me that my cosplay was amazing.  She asked for a picture, and then she hugged me.  She told me how much she loved me and  was really happy that she was able to met me.  At this moment I realized that cosplay is more than just dressing up as a character.  You’re bringing a fictional character to life!  I think that if I got into cosplay it’s because of this girl and other person that are amazed to meet their idols and/or favorite characters.  I always loved  acting too! And cosplay is a new way to do it for me. I also met a lot of new friends because of this passion.

What was your first cosplay?

My first cosplay was Yoruichi Shihouin from Bleach.  It was the version when she’s fighting Soi Fon.

Do you make your own cosplay costumes, if so, which ones, and how long does an average costume take to make?

Yes I make my cosplays myself.  The only one that I didn’t make is a present I received for Christmas.  The time I spend working on a costume depends of the costume itself.  It took me one week-end (less than 3 days) to make my Akatsuki dress (inspired from Naruto Shippuden), but it took me 3 months to do my Rin Kagamine daughter of evil cosplay (Vocaloid).  But I would say that I spend approximately 1-2 weeks to 1 month making my cosplay now.

Who is your favorite character to play?

My favorite cosplay so far is Yoruichi Shihouin from Bleach.  I think that I like cosplaying as her because we’re almost sharing the same personality.  But Hinata and Saya are not too far behind.

Amongst animation, comics, movies, or video games, what is your biggest inspiration for cosplay?

I think that my biggest inspiration for cosplay is animation.

Have you ever made any mistakes that you’d warn a first timer about?

Yes.  When I started cosplaying I thought that cosplaying was about being the most identical to the character.  Because of that, I didn’t wanted to cosplay as white characters and when I cosplayed a white character for the first time, I spend an entire summer hiding from the sun so I would not get darker.  It took me almost a year to understand than even if I’m darker than the characters I’m cosplaying I will still enjoy myself.  That’s when I realized that cosplay is for fun regardless your body type, origins, skin color, etc.

Another mistake I did (and I’m still doing it sometimes) is that even if you think that you have time to work on your cosplays, start working on them as soon as you’re able to.  Because if you’re always reporting it , you’ll be working on your cosplay the day before the convention! (Or you’ll have to make 3 cosplays in a week like I did..!)

Are there certain characters that are easier to cosplay as than others?

Eum…I’d say yes.  Since I’m trying to ‘’be’’ the character I’m cosplaying as, it’s easier to play someone who has a the same personality as yours or the closest.  That’s why it’s harder for me to cosplay as characters who are silent or are emotionless.
And sometimes, crossplaying may be tough.
