Cosplay Spotlight: Dokudel

Let’s stare at Dokudel, who’s under the COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT!!!!!

Why do you cosplay?

Hmmmm… good question! XD Technically I have been cosplaying since 1998  And going to my first con in 2001. I was fasinated by the hobby when my parents use to buy me Animerica magazines. And a good buddy Kevin Lillard would take photos of every cosplayer at every show. Seeing your favorite characters come to life when someone dresses up as them! I knew this would be something amazing and fun so I convinced my parents to let me start this hobby along with my sister [Ai].

What was your first cosplay?

When I did my technical first cosplay was in 1998. I made a Tifa Lockheart costume from Final Fantasy 7. My mother helped me make the costume. Then for my first con Cammy White from Street Fighter. Tifa I chose her at the time because she was a strong amazing character at the time. Then I chose Cammy because I would always play as her when me and siblings would play Street Fighter together.

Do you make your own cosplay costumes, if so, which ones, and how long does an average costume take to make?

I have made for myself and for others over 300 costumes… But for myself I have made well over 100. I do not have every costume documented, a lot of them were pretty crappy or just didnt have a camera at the time. Nowadays it is much easier to document your work. Depending on a costume for myself I can dedicate a whole day to make a costume or the longest was about 2 years, of course some of those costumes being on and off again projects.

What is your favorite character to play?

Ugh this is a hard question to answer! I 90% of the time make a costume of a character I love or I wouldnt make it at all. Unless when its for a group project and it makes it easier to be a character to complete the group. I like to pick Cammy White cause if it werent for the compliments, the attention I got in the costume or the people I interacted with this costume I would have not continued this hobby. Wearing that costume I made a lot of costume friends which I am still friends to this day.

Amongst animation, comics, movies, or video games, what is your biggest inspiration for cosplay?

My inspiration to cosplay… I have many reasons. I grew up watching and playing anime and video games. I was never use to the American t.v./media culture till I was in my teens. Anime and games are just imbedded  into my brain and cant think of a life without the stuff! I would say first being my parents. They are the reason I grew up with the anime culture and they support it to this day. Also the friends I made along this crazy cosplay journey.

Have you ever made any mistakes that you’d warn a first timer about?

Oh boy have I! I use to get teased about it a lot… make up. I hate being a girly girl which looking at my cosplay photos is hard to believe. To me make up makes or breaks the costume. For me I always look at the face first before the costume. I know some people have allergies to make up and they cant wear is understandable. I also go the extra mile to invest in cosplay contacts. I own over 10 pairs and try my best to look exactly like the character. Pick fabrics that are accurate, I would rather spend the extra money to have a beautiful fabric that looks accurate. Take your time in learning costume techniques dont jump into crazy projects. Read up in tutorials on how to make certain parts. Iron and sew your seams!

Are there certain characters that are easier to play than others?

I think its easier for me to play boy characters then playing girl characters. Well the boys I have always cosplayed are not as emotional so I dont have to play a crazy wild character. The girl characters I chose usually are the crazy girls who are in love and have bouncing energy. But in the end always pick a character you love, when you have the love for the character you will go the extra mile to be like them and make yourself proud!
