Thursday November 12th at 7:00pm is the opening ceremony for the Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival. The Festival (PAAFF) will carry on everyday until Sunday November 22nd. On opening night though, all attendees are encouraged to come dressed in your best 80s attire. From the Transformers to Brat Packers to time travelers to Ghostbusters, all are totally welcome. The best dressed will be awarded in our costume contest judged by an awesome panel consisting of filmmaker Benson Lee, J1 Studios’ own Jason Richardson, and cosplayers Marc “Knuckles” Carter, and Mae Claire. Winners could walk away with prizes like an all-access badge to enjoy the rest of this year’s festival, an HBO prize pack, and a ticket to next year’s J1-Con (one day pass).
The 2015 Philadelphia Asian-American Film kicks off with an epic throwback. On Thursday night at 7:00pm, the International House in University City will be transported back to the 1980s thanks to the John Hughes-esque teen comedy ‘Seoul Searching’.
Based on a summer exchange program attended by writer/director Benson Lee in 1986, ‘Seoul Searching’ tells a universal coming-of-age story chock full of pop culture tropes, teen hijinks, and first love. You can check out the trailer for the film below:
Lee will be present for a post-screening Q&A before joining all ticket and badge holders at the PAAFF’15 Opening Night Reception, which features food from Seorabol Korean Restaurant, complimentary beer/wine, 80s dance music by DJ ADUB and Dj Mighty Mike Saga, a photo booth, and giveaways.
