Shin Evangelion Gekijō-ban :|| is the next and final installment of the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, based on the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Studio Khara has begun streaming the video on their official website for the film. Hideaki Anno, who created the original anime series, is directing the film with TOHO and Toei Animation handling distribution.
Rebuild of Evangelion, known in Japan as Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition, is a Japanese animated film series and a reboot of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime television series, produced by Studio Khara. Hideaki Anno served as the writer and general manager of the project, with Kazuya Tsurumaki and Masayuki directing the films themselves. The film tetralogy uses newly available 3D CG animation, and provides new scenes, settings and characters, with a completely new conclusion in the fourth film.
The original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime aired from March 1995 to October 1996 on TV Tokyo. The series centered on Shinji, a teenage boy who was recruited by his father to the shadowy organization Nerv to pilot a giant bio-machine mecha called an “Evangelion” into combat with alien beings called “Angels”. The series explores the experiences and emotions of Evangelion pilots and members of Nerv as they try to prevent any and all of the Angels from causing another cataclysm, and as they deal with the quest of finding out the real truth behind events and organizational moves. Neon Genesis Evangelion was a commercial success the deconstructed the mecha genre, leading it to a rebirth of the anime industry and becoming a cultural icon. As of 2018, it has become the 17th highest grossing franchise of all time with an estimated revenue of $14.9 billion.
