New Line casts its Sonya Blade and Kano for Mortal Kombat film reboot

Coming on the heels of the announcement of Mehcad Brooks, Sisi Stringer and Judi Lin being cast as Jax, Mileena and Liu Kang respectively less than a month ago, New Line reveals that the roles of Sonya Blade and Kano have been filled. The Meg’s Jessica McNamee and House of Flies’ Josh Lawson will portray the franchise’s deadliest of adversaries, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Also in talks is Lewis Tan, who recently starred in Netflix’s Wu Assassins series, about a role in the film. Rumor has it that he is looking at portraying Johnny Cage but this is unconfirmed.

Having Sonya and Kano in the film is a big deal since their rivalry is one of the best known in the gaming world, dating back to the first game in 1992. Sonya is one of the main protagonists throughout the series so including her in the reboot means that Kano would be coming along as well. While it is unknown whether the new film will tell their storied history, director Simon McQuoid will likely touch on the subject.

The roles of Sonya Blade and Kano were played by Bridgette Wilson and Trevor Goddard in the 1995 Mortal Kombat film.
