Check out the new trailer released by Netflix today for the upcoming American adaption of the popular thriller manga series “Death Note.” Directed by Adam Wingard (You’re Next, Blair Witch), the film stars Nat Wolff as Light Turner, a teenage boy who finds a mysterious notebook that has the power to kill anyone whose name is written in it. He is visited by the owner of the book, the Shimigami Ryuk (voiced by Willem Dafoe) who watches with glee as Light sets out to change the world.
Now let’s be clear. This is an American version of the Japanese series so changes have been made. Most of the main characters now have American names. Light Yagami, his father Siochiro, and Misa Amane are now called Light Turner, James Turner and Mia Sutton. No lie, Willem Dafoe as Ryuk is pretty dang creepy. As long as the movie retains elements from the anime/manga series such as the cat and mouse battle between Light and L, then this could actually be a decent adaption. How good it ends up being depends ultimately on how Light is portrayed in this film. Death Note premieres August 25 on Netflix.
