Disney has found their Ariel. The House of Mouse announced that Grown-ish actress and singer Halle Bailey will portray the titular character in the live action remake of “The Little Mermaid.” She is best known as the half sister of R&B duo Chloe X Halle. She also had a supporting role on FreeForm’s Grown-ish. The Little Mermaid has been busy rounding out its cast. Child actor Jacob Tremblay and singer/actress Awkwafina have been cast to play Flounder and Scuttle, Ariel’s companions. Melissa McCarthy is in talks to portray Ursula, the tentacled sea witch who grants Ariel her desire to venture to the surface world while stealing her voice in the process.
The Little Mermaid will follow previous live Disney remakes by including both new and original songs. Original Composer Alan Menken returns to write the film’s music. Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is widely known for creating and starring in the Broadway musicals In the Heights and Hamilton, is slated to write the lyrics.
