Yes, you read that correctly.
Daniel Kaluuya, star of the 2017 horror flick “Get Out”, is working with Mattel Films to produce a live action movie featuring Barney the Dinosaur. The big, purple lovable T-Rex warmed children’s hearts from 1992 to 2009 with his message of love, friendship and helping others.
According to THR, the new Barney film will update the character so he can resonate with adults while still spreading his caring message of friendship to children. He is among several Mattel properties that are set up for theatrical features including Hot Wheels, Masters of the Universe and Barbie, the latter of which has “Suicide Squad’s” Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach attached to it.
Daniel Kaluuya will produce the film through his newly established 56% banner, with Rowan Riley and Amandla Crichlow. Mattel Film’s Kevin McKeon will oversee the project. Kaluuya has said, “”Barney was a ubiquitous figure in many of our childhoods, then he disappeared into the shadows, left misunderstood. We’re excited to explore this compelling modern-day hero and see if his message of ‘I love you, you love me’ can stand the test of time.” As of now, there is no studio attached to the film.
However, the live action Barbie film will bring the fashion queen to the big screen on May 8, 2020.
