The official website for the 20th Dragon Ball film has revealed the date for the upcoming movie based on Akira Toriyama’s current incarnation of his beloved characters. Tentatively title “Dragon Ball Super”, the film is scheduled for release in Japan on December 14. Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama is writing the script and the film will be directed by Tatsuya Nagamine, who also directed “One Piece film Z.” Also on staff are Naohiro Shintani (key animation on the Dragon Ball: Yo! The Return of Son Goku and Friends!! ONA) as animation director, and Kazuo Ogura (One Piece Film Gold, One Piece Film Z) on art direction. Of course, the incredibly powerful Masako Nozawa will be back as Goku.
According to Toriyama, the Dragon Ball Super film will take place after the climatic battle of the Tournament of Power. He has been very hands on with the anime and will be again with the new film. Akira has also been working on new character designs and has said that the film will introduce “a long awaited powerful enemy.” He is also giving more insight to the Saiyans and Frieza’s back stories. Toriyama has said that the though the Dragon Ball Super anime is ending for now, Toyotarō’s Dragon Ball Super manga will continue, and he thinks it will have different developments from both the TV series and movie.
