Good ol’ trusty Rusty Winns gets his COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT!!

Why do you cosplay?

Mostly I cosplay for the love of the comic/movie characters I grew up with. As soon as I started seeing the absolute amazing costumes that people were putting together as tribute to the heroes I love I knew I had to get involved. There is just something so amazing about seeing a character come to life.

What was your first cosplay?

My first Cosplay was Cobra Commander from the 1980s GI-joe cartoon. We had a couple friends that were very involved in the Cosplay community. They had been costuming as Scarlet and Law from GI-Joe and challenged me to put together a Cobra Commander. I was thrilled to take on the challenge and was addicted from then on out.

Do you make your own cosplay costumes, if so, which ones, and how long does an average costume take to make?

I like to think of my costumes as a group project. I love to make props. (swords, guns, masks, ect) but I cant sew a lick. Luckily I have a couple friend that are a wiz with the needle. I feel extremely fortunate to have people that will help me when it comes to sewing and I am more than happy to help when they have a prop that need to be made.

What is your favorite character to play?

My favorite character to play is the Blue Beetle (Ted Kord version) The great thing about the Blue Beetle is he smiles a lot. When I am in costume I just cant contain my happiness. I once put together a Batman Costume. It was a complete disaster. I was the happiest Dark night that the world had ever seen. Since then that costume has been passed on to Jay Tallsquall who does it far more justice.

Amongst animation, comics, movies, or video games, what is your biggest inspiration for cosplay?

I am a proud comic nerd. I truly love the characters that I read about in comics. I have done a few costumes inspired by movies and cartoons but I tend to gravitate towards the comic heroes.

Have you ever made any mistakes that you’d warn a first timer about?

I think the biggest mistake that i made was taking this hobby to serious. Dressing up in a crazy costume is just plan fun. If it becomes more than a hobby in your life you have taken it to far. I love hanging around with like minded friends.

Are there certain characters that are easier to cosplay as than others?

I normally tend to gravitate toward characters that have humor. If I have to be somber and morose I just cant get into the character. For me it is all about having fun.
