Cosplay Spotlight: Miss Sinister Cosplay

It’s an honor to present Miss Sinister Cosplay, this week’s COSPLAY SPOTLIGHT!!!!!

Why do you cosplay?

Cosplay is a great way to meet people and see the creative solutions fans bring in order to recreate their favorite characters. I have loved Halloween since I was young, and always loved dressing up as characters from movies or shows I liked (ex: Queen Amidala). So really, it’s an escape from reality where I don’t have to deal with hardships from home, and can simply enjoy time with other people who are like myself.

What was your first cosplay?

Orochimaru from Naruto- the scene where Kakashi is trying to maintain the curse seal on Sasuke during the Chunin Exams. I never really enjoyed the poncho-looking outfit… but he was my favorite character, so I had to find one outside the norm. I loved cosplaying as him, but the contacts were extremely thick and painful… My eyes sting just thinking about them.

Do you make your own cosplay costumes, if so, which ones, and how long does an average costume take to make?

Sadly not. My form of artistic talent is painting. I haven’t really used a sewing machine and have yet to make my own props. If someone were to come to me for a body painting job or to detail their props though… I’d have no problem 😉 But because I purchase my cosplay from others, it does get quite expensive. So I’m currently selling my artwork to help.

What is your favorite character to play?

So far, I really enjoy Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell. She isn’t the most popular character in my arsenal, but she’s such a stone cold badass… who wouldn’t enjoy playing the part? I guess out of all the characters I cosplay as, I connect with her the most on a personal level. She was my 2nd cosplay, and I’ve been cosplaying as her since 2011.

Amongst animation, comics, movies, or video games, what is your biggest inspiration for cosplay?

I’ve loved video games all my life, and I have enjoyed Anime since the moment I was introduced to it (roughly 10 years old)… so my cosplay involves 3 Anime characters and 2 video game characters. They’re pretty equal ^_^

Have you ever made any mistakes that you’d warn a first timer about?

Yes. If you aren’t making the costumes yourself, it is important to find a costumer you can trust will charge you the right amount for the item. I have been over-charged a few times and remained polite, but will never go back to the person who made the item… nor will I recommend them to anyone.

Are there certain characters that are easier to play than others?

Some take a lot more time to put on than others… Taki takes at least 40 minutes to do my hair (since it’s not a wig it takes much longer to get just right) and get everything on. Motoko is fairly easy, because it’s just a bathing suit type leotard, pants, jacket, gloves, and boots… with minimal makeup and a wig! Extremely easy. Plus, when I’m in an irritated mood after lots of walking, it’s very easy to pull off Motoko’s attitude 😉
