Chihaya Ayase continues to her quest to be the best karuta player in Japan. The anime adaption of Yuki Suetsugu’s yosei manga “Chihayafuru is set to return in 2019 for a third season that will broadcast as part of Nippon TV’s “AnimeU” block. These series voice actors Asami Seto, Mamoru Miyano, and Yoshimasa Hosoya will return to reprise their roles as the main characters Chihaya Ayase, Taichi Mashima and Arata Wataya, respectively. However, there are currently no details about the plot.
Chihayafuru is serialized in Kodansha’s “Be Love” josei magazine and the English adaption is available in Kodansha Comics. The series follows high school girl Chihaya Ayase who spent her life supporting her sister’s modeling career. Things change when she meets a young boy named Arata Wataya, a talented karuta player. After the two became friends, Arata sees that Chihaya has the potential to be a great karuta player. Chihaya is soon separated from her karuta playing friends as they grow up. She strives to become the best karuta player in the world and to one day be with Arata again.
The first season of the anime adaption of Chihayafuru aired on Nippon TV and Crunchyroll between October 2011 and March 2012. Season two ran from January to June 2013. Chihayafuru was also adapted into two live action films. The first film, “Chihayafuru: Kami no Ku,” was released in Japan by Toho on March 19, 2016. It was followed by Chihayafuru: Shimo no Ku, released in Japan on April 29, 2016. Chihayafuru: Musubi, the third and final film in the series, is scheduled for release in 2018.
