“It has been ten years since that day. Aerith was just a young girl. She was all I have. Because of her, I was able to continue onward after we lost Gaston,” Elanohr said.
Ecks and Willow have listened attentively to Elanohr recall that terrible tragedy. They can’t help but feel her sorrow for losing her husband and now the disappearance of her daughter. “You and Aerith continued to merchant to keep your heads afloat,” Ecks said.
“”Yes, Aerith and I have gone together to sell goods on various towns,” Eleanor tells him. “Wherever my daughter and Larissa went together, I would merchant with my friend Elga. Larissa is her daughter. She’s missing as well.”
“Ecks told me that it’s been days since you’ve seen her,” says Willow.
“Elga was so distraught. She already fears the worst. I’ve gone to her house several times, but she doesn’t answer,” Elanohr said, wiping away a tear.
Ecks steps to Eleanor and rests his hands on her shoulders. She looks up at him. “We’re going to find both Aerith and Larissa. I promise. But we need to speak with Elga and get her input. Okay?” he says in a comforting yet serious tone.
“Okay,” replies Eleanor. “Elga’s house is on the next street over. I’ll take you to it.”
“Thank you,” said Willow kindly.
Eleanor respond with a smile and a nod. Then they leave to visit Elga.
The Collins Feral Pub in Eshtar is livelier than usual. Most of its patrons are out-of-towners who are here for the summit meeting between the Alchemists and the Steamists. They have come to relax and unwind before the debate begins. Beatrice and Amanda sat in a secluded area with the Knoxville family, listening to Councilman Leopoldo spin the tale of how he and Odetta met, of their many rumps together and the secret crush he had on Odetta’s sister Tesliann Knoxville who married Leopoldo’s brother Tomas. Tiphanee smiles and shakes her head. It’s a story she has heard many times before and her uncle tells it more extravagant than the last time. Beatrice and Amanda smile politely. They are reminded of the times they have spent with Beatrice and Willow’s father Rowland Ashcroft where he would spin the same stories. Still, Leopoldo is entertaining.
“Well, enough about us,” Leopoldo says before takin a sip of ale. He then looks at Beatrice curiously. “High Captain Ashcroft, was it?” he asks.
“Yes?” Beatrice replied.
“Any relation to Rowland Ashcroft, the Paladin Knight of Zanadour?”
“Yes, he’s my father. Wait, Paladin?” Beatrice says.
“Hmm, you haven’t heard. Rowland achieved the title not too long ago. About three months, I believe. I know Rowland is not one to advertise but why he wouldn’t tell his own daughter I’ll never get,” Leopoldo says.
Beatrice sighs lightly. She knows her father is a hard man. It’s no surprise that he would not have informed her of his promotion to the highest rank in the Zanadour Knighthood. “Father has always been like that,” she says.
“Indeed. He can be a difficult man to deal with,” Leopoldo agreed.
“How did you meet Sir Rowland, Councilman Knoxville,” Amanda asked.
“Please, no formalities,” Leopoldo said with a chuckle. “Just Leo will do. It was about, err, when was that, my dear?”
Odetta is in the midst of consuming her ale when she hears her husband. She sets her mug down and stare at him classy eyed. “Hmm, it was about two years ago, I think,” she says. Odetta then requests another fill. Once served, she begins consuming immediately. Tiphanee drops her head in hand.
“Oh that’s right. Two years ago at a summit held in Trumont, that is where I met Rowland. I was there representing Eshtar who has trade ties with Trumont and Rowland was there serving as Antone Gaiboni’s guard,” Leopoldo tells them.
“Antone Gaiboni, the Grand Duke of the Gaiboni Regal family in Zanadour. I have heard of him,” said Beatrice. “The Gaiboni family have contacts with many kingdoms and cities across Eiris. They’re one of the biggest businesses in trading goods.”
“Just as insightful as Rowland said,” Leopoldo chuckled. “Yes, the Gaiboni family are one of the largest traders. The summit was to establish a new route to the Karys Region.”
“Karys was closed off by a massive landslide years ago, right Uncle?” Tiphanee said.
“Correct, my dear. I see your father has been teaching you to ropes,” Leopoldo responded.
“Actually, mom’s the one who has been teaching me.”
“Oh! I stand corrected,” laughed the Councilman. “Brains as well as beauty. Your mother has always been smart as a whip. Yes, the collapse of Biara Mountain left Karys with no way to import supplies. The summit held in Doyleston was to discuss the undertaking of unblocking that path. It was a joint effort between Eshtar and Zanadour that would take two years. During that time, I have gotten to know Rowland and rekindle an old friendship with Antone who I haven’t seen in quite some time. Oh, Rowland spoke fondly of his daughters. In fact, that all he talked about more so than business.” Leopoldo pauses to take a swig of ale. “That’s right. There’s two of you, isn’t there?” he asks Beatrice.
“Yes, my sister Williamina,” answers Beatrice.
“Is she a knight as well?” Odetta asks with a lazy tone. The ale begins to affect her.
“No, she is not. However, she does excel in the mystic arts,” Beatrice says and then takes a swig of ale.
“Oh.” Odetta stares at Beatrice distantly. Then she breaks into a wide grin. “Does she have a killer rack like you?” she asks.
Both Amanda and Tiphanee recoil at Odetta’s forwardness. Odetta is known for being forward but Tiphanee has nearly forgotten how forward her aunt is when she drinks. Councilman Leopoldo looks at his wife partially in shock. However, Beatrice takes it in stride. Willow has gotten like Odetta is right now many times before. She even knows about Willow’s drunken incident with the bar maids in Boyer Village though the knowledge of that did not come to her from Ecks or Willow. No doubt Odetta is the same way after a few rounds of ale. Beatrice is more than used to this type of behavior. “Well, she does have an impressive bust. The outfit Amanda is wearing belongs to my sister and she barely fills it out,” she says calmly before taking a drink of ale.
“Lady Beatrice!” Amanda whined. Beatrice laughs at her. One of her favorite past times is teasing her subordinate. Amanda groans. It bothered her at times when Beatrice pestered her. Suddenly, she begins to get an uncomfortable feeling. Peering to her right, she sees Odetta leaning in close to her.
“You’re right. There’s at least a couple inches of space left,” Odetta says bluntly, gazing at Amanda’s bust. Amanda gasps and crosses her arms over her chest, and Tiphanee shakes her head.
Leopoldo bursts out laughing. “I take it your sister can be just as eccentric as my wife. You’re the only other person I’ve met who can deal with her,” he says.
Beatrice says, laughing, “Sometimes you just have to give them what they want.”
“Hey, where’s everyone going?” asked Odetta.
Curious, everyone looks around the tavern to see many of the patrons paying their tabs and leaving. Leopoldo takes out his pocket watch and checks the time. “Ah, I do believe it is time for us to dash,” he says. He places the watch back in his pocket before glancing over at Tiphanee. Leopoldo smiles kindly. “Tiphanee, can you be a dear and take care of your aunt? That’s her sixth or seventh mug.”
Tiphanee grumbled as she peers over to her aunt just as she throws her head back and drains her current mug of ale. Odetta slams the mug down and exasperates a satisfying sigh. She then looks up with hazy eyes at her niece. A lazy grin slides across her face. “You’re so cute,” she says sluggishly with a laugh. Odetta takes up a mug that was Amanda’s and drains that quickly as well. “And so’s yer girlfriend. And the blonde chick with the ripe rack. I’d bet they’re soft like pillows,” she spoke, slurring her words.
With a sigh and a shake of her head, Tiphanee goes over to her intoxicated aunt. Complaining is pointless. This is expected every time Odetta and her uncle are socializing. Leopoldo remains dignified while Odetta becomes unrefined which leaves Tiphanee to tend to her aunt who is a total lush. There have been several times when she had to haul her mother to bed after a few rounds of ale. However, Tiphanee’s mother has a better handle when it comes to ale than Odetta. But Tiphanee doesn’t mind. This is her family after all. She loves them, no matter how much they embarrass her at times. “Come on, Aunt Odetta,” she says calmly, gently lifting the woman’s loose body up.
“Oh hi, Tiphy,” Odetta says, calling Tiphanee by her childhood nickname. Odetta giggles. “Tiphy. Tipsy Tiphy. Tipsy Tiphy,” she sang merrily even though she is the one who is tipsy. Tiphanee just shakes her head with a smile. It’s going to take a little more to sober Odetta enough to attend the meeting without making too much of a fool of herself.
Leopoldo chuckles. “Oh dear, it appears that Odetta has had a little too much this time,” he says. His tolerance for his young wife’s antics is unflappable. Nothing she does can truly embarrass him or make him feel uncomfortable. “Tiphanee might have a tough time with her this time,” he adds.
“Hm, you’re right,” Beatrice agreed. “Amanda, why don’t you give her a hand, will you?”
“Actually Milady, isn’t this a family matter? I think Tiphanee is doing ju—” Amanda started to say before begins to feel the chilling glare of her superior bearing down on her, making her feel smaller than she already is given the fact that her head stops just below Beatrice’s nose. “Eep!” Amanda squeaked. She then hurries over to Tiphanee before Beatrice issues a harsh reprimand for opposing a direct order. They carry off Odetta who is still singing her merry tune.
“A glare that can subdue a Bandersnatch. Rowland has said that about you as well,” Leopoldo says in a pleasant tone.
“My father sure talks a lot about me,” said Beatrice.
“Well, he is proud. Even if he doesn’t express it,” replies Leopoldo. He watches the smile draws across Beatrice’s face and chuckles lightly. “Well then, shall we be off?” He opens the door and allows Beatrice to exit first. Leopoldo takes a quick peek at her behind before following her out.
