“And that is why we must move forward with steam technology. We can make incredible advances science and the people will benefit greatly. Steam technology is for the good of all of Eshtar. Alchemy has recently been proven to have far too many risks. I’m not saying that steam technology isn’t without its own risks but those risks are far less consequential than that of alchemy gone awry,” Yazmine finished. She has told Beatrice her reasons for implementing steam technology in favor of the Alchemic principles that were established and have been a part of Eshtarian culture for centuries. Yazmine sees alchemy as a relic, a thing of the past that should be forgotten to make way for the future. She has seen the dangers of alchemy when used improperly and believes that steam technology will rectify this.
Abagail does not follow her sister’s faith in new technology. She wants to uphold the traditions she was born into, that she was taught, that she is teaching now. Alchemy has been the way of life in Eshtar ever since the science was discovered by the First Elders of Eshtar. Their teachings have been passed down through the ages. With this, materials can be created rather than mined in the troll inhabited caves of Mount Doongar in Eshtar’s Chanteau Region. The trolls, who were driven from their home in Vesparr to the mountain following the war with the Orcs of Gurthang, began threatening the Eshtar miners, making work difficult and dangerous. The First Elders worked on devising a way to help the people of the region. It is said that the Elders were powerful mystics who incorporated science into their magic which led to the creation of alchemy. Formulas took the place of incantations and Eshtar’s prospered. What was once pushed on the verge of ruin had begun to gain ground. Crops became rich with harvest. Home were built. Jobs were provided. And soon trade to other towns and kingdoms began. The First Elders saved Eshtar and in turn, Eshtar became one of the most prominent cities in Eiris. This is the history that Abagail wants to preserve. The history she believes so strongly in. Yazmine and others like her focused on the dark side of alchemy thanks to the discovery of the geothermal well beneath Torresdale by Erma Ulbech, Abagail and Yazmine’s grandmother. This started the rift between Torresdale and Arendale, the sister towns that border either side of Eshtar City.
Both Arendale and Torresdale were sister Alchemic towns that upheld the teachings of the First Elders, educating youngsters in the magical science craft. The peaceful existence came to an end when Erma, Head of Torresdale’s Regal District, tapped into the Geothermal well below the town and learned to harness its power. Her husband, Larson Ulbech, second seat of Arendale’s Regal District, was amazed with Erma’s plans to harness the power of the geothermal well. Together, they devised a way to incorporate this new ‘steam’ technology into the alchemical formulas of the Elders. Their joint discovery would push Eshtar beyond even the most prosperous kingdoms. Sadly, that would never come to pass. Just as she was setting to present her ideas to the Eshtar Council, Erma received tragic news. Her nephews, Jonah and Yorick, had committed a taboo in alchemy. The brothers attempted to create a living being, a homunculus, using the body of their dead mother, Erma’s sister Deavone, as a catalyst. The transmutation failed and both boys were severely injured. Erma was distraught over the state her nephews were left in, more so than when Deavone was killed after dueling a rouge alchemist. With this, she saw just how dangerous alchemy can be when it is misused. Erma soon abandoned the teachings and immersed herself into her work to harness the steam energy from the geothermal well. As Head of Torresdale’s Regal District, it wasn’t difficult to convince the people of the town to leave alchemy behind and move forward with steam technology. However, Larson Ulbech still believed in the teachings of the First Elders and the history of Eshtar itself. He tried to convince his wife that both alchemy and steam technology can coexist. Erma had her mind set otherwise. She blamed alchemy for her sister’s death, her nephews’ injuries and her brother-in-law’s depression and eventual suicide. She tried to convince the Eshtar Council to consider fully implementing steam technology in favor of alchemy. The Council denied this as they still have strong belief in the teachings that have shaped the Eshtar Region. As an act of defiance, Erma declared that Torresdale become independent from Eshtar City and Arendale in order to forge their own path and follow it. Larson, reluctantly, agrees along with the remaining Arendale Regal District seats. His marriage to Erma faltered. He tried on numerous occasions to reconcile with Erma. Every letter sent was returned. Erma’s wedding ring soon followed, returned without explanation. Left with no recourse, Larson succeeded to the first seat of Arendale’s Regal District and fought to uphold the principles of the First Elders, the establishers of alchemy.
A fight that continues right now. Abagail Ulbech strongly believes in the teachings that shaped Eshtar over the centuries the same as her grandfather and parents. She does not want those teachings to be cast aside and lost in history. She cannot fathom why her twin sister refuses to see how important the history—the teachings—of the alchemy that has helped establish, shape and made Eshtar prosperous really is. “True. There have been times when alchemy has been used improperly. The Alchemic War that happened 200 years ago is evidence of this. But before that, alchemy helped shape Eshtar. We thrived because of it and the teachings of the First Elders. We do so even now after the Alchemic War. It is people who stray from those teachings or ignore them that cause problems. But we should not let that tarnish the very foundation of our society. This is our history, both the good and the bad. We must continue to learn from both so we can continue to thrive and grow. That’s how it has been done since the First Elders. That’s what makes us a nation. And we shouldn’t cast it aside. Those teachings are what define us. If we cast aside our history, where does that leave our future.”
The hall stood in silence. Abagail’s speech was moving. She spoke with heartfelt passion—passion she feels for the First Elders, for the teachings they left behind, for the history of Eshtar and its future. Even Yazmine stood in reverence. It is the first time she truly heard her twin sister speak from her heart. Abagail truly believes in the First Elders and the principles of alchemy. Just as much as she believes in the advancement of steam technology. Yazmine sympathizes with her sister but she has seen first-hand what happens when alchemy goes unchecked. She feels that it is too dangerous to continue with its teachings. Steam technology can everything that alchemy can and more. She cannot be moved by passion.
“Yes, alchemy has made Eshtar what it is today. This is true. However, it has a dark history. The Alchemic War, the incident involving our relatives, and Ulla Argento.”
“Damn you!” Abagail snapped, pounding the podium with a clench fist. “How dare you, Yaz?” She shoots her twin an angry look. Her eyes filled with tears. “How dare you say her name?! Knowing how I feel!” she lashed out. “You know what happened was an accident!”
“All the more reason! Alchemy has become a bane on Eshtar, more so than its salvation. So why not dismiss it and the dark past it has created!” Yazmine shot back.
“Steam technology is no different! Do I need to run through the list or do you wish to visit the infirmary!”
“Like it or not, not much good has come from alchemy in recent years. You should know better than anyone!” Abagail stood in shock. She knew exactly what her sister implied. Never did she think that Yazmine can cut her so deeply. Yazmine knew that her sister’s feelings are hurt. She thought about stopping but her emotions are too high. Before she knew it, the words fell out of her mouth. “Ulla Argento didn’t and look what happened,” she said sharply.
Those last words sliced through Abagail’s heart. Her stare is blank. She knew Yazmine is just as passionate about steam technology as she is about upholding the principles of alchemy. But she never would have guessed that her sister could be this harsh. Yazmine is the last person Abagail expected to use her feelings as a weapon against her. Shocked and angry, Abagail is at a loss for words. She gives her sister a look of pain, disappointment and pity. Eyes full of tears, Abagail runs out of the court hall. Yazmine has come at her harshly before. This time, however, she went too far.
The eyes of the Alchemists of Arendale fall upon Yazmine. Anger. Disappointment. Pity. Resentment. Loathing. Yazmine takes these gazes from the people of Arendale. She remains firm. She cannot falter in the eyes of her fellow Steamists. No matter how much she is being torn apart by her guilt for gouging out Abagail’s heart. Collecting herself, Yazmine resumes to pushing her argument while seizing the opportunity to gain the upper hand. “I apologize for my sister’s behavior. Clearly she let her emotions get the better—” she stoically says before being cut off by Beatrice.
“That’s quite enough, Miss Ulbech,” Beatrice sternly shot at her.
“I agree, Lady Ashcroft,” says Jameson Albright. “If there is anyone who has shown deplorable behavior it is you, Yazmine Ulbech.”
Yazmine stood stunned, eyes wide behind her thin glasses. “I’m…sorry. I don’t understand what you could mean,” she replied.
“The account of what happened with Miss Argento was ruled to be secretive,” said Jameson. “You knew this and yet, you still used your sister’s love against her.”
“I apologize Councilman Albright,” says Yazmine.
“That is fine. But you did violate a rule,” added Zelda. “Personal issues must be kept out of summit meetings. What happened with your grandparents is on a different matter since their actions affected the relations between the villages. Bringing up Ulla Argento is not permissible.” Councilwoman Integra looks to the telegraphers and tells them, “Please strike that statement from the records.”
“I propose a recess until Miss Abagail is able to return,” Leopoldo suggested.
“Agreed,” replies Jameson Albright.
“Very well then. A twelve-hour recess to give Abagail Ulbech time to collect herself,” Zelda proposed. Looking down on Yazmine, she adds, “And to give Yazmine Ulbech time to reflect on her recent behavior.” Yazmine hangs her head in shame.
Yazmine steps down from the stand. She bombarded with harsh glares and disgusted sneers from the Alchemists as she walked back to join her fellow Steamists. She keeps her poise though inside, she regrets what she did to Abagail. Again, her sense of duty as Torresdale’s Representative wins out over finding her twin sister and comforting her. Without any reaction, Yazmine leads the Steamists out of the Council Hall. The Alchemists exit through the other side.
Beatrice and Amanda watched the scene. They feel for Yazmine. Though she doesn’t show it, they can tell that she is torn between her duties as a representative and her duties to her sister. It is a difficult position to be in. Yazmine cannot falter in being Torresdale’s representative yet she doesn’t want to widen the wedge that has been driven between her and Abagail. However, she fears that she may have after bringing up Ulla. Beatrice knows that feeling. With her position as High Captain of Arcana Kingdom, there have been times where she had to put her duties ahead of her sister Wilhelmina. The difference is that she wouldn’t do anything to hurt her sister. True, there were moments when Beatrice disappointed Willow, but she hasn’t hurt her feelings. At least, she hopes she hasn’t.
“It is a difficult position, isn’t it?” Beatrice and Amanda look back as Leopoldo and Odetta approach. “Balancing duty and family is no easy task,” he says.
“No, it isn’t,” Beatrice replies.
“Aww, it’s sad. It wasn’t always like this. They’re twin sisters so you’d think they be more alike,” said Odetta.
“What happened?” Amanda asked.
“For the lack of a better term, a series of unfortunate events,” said Leopoldo.
“How so?” Beatrice wondered.
“It is a rather interesting story. One suited for after a good rest,” said Leopoldo. “Tiphanee my dear, could you return with Lady Beatrice and Lady Amanda to the inn.”
Tiphanee replies, “Yes Uncle.”
Beatrice looks at him suspiciously. Before he had no issue answering their questions. So why has he opted to not answer this one. Is he trying to hide something?
“Worry not, Lady Ashcroft. I just do not want to discuss the matter here,” Leopoldo says, smiling pleasantly. “I will tell you the story after we have rested, I promise.”
Beatrice throws a keen eye at him. Councilman Leopoldo has been nothing short of kind and warming. His gentle tone and kindly demeanor pushes any misgivings she had towards him just now away. “Very well then. Where shall we meet you?” she says.
“We can finish our discussion at our home. Tiphanee can bring you by later,” Leopoldo suggests.
“Thank you, Councilman,” said Amanda.
“Until then, rest well,” Beatrice said.
“You as well, Milady,” Leopoldo says with a polite bow. He and Odetta then make their way out of the Council Hall.
“Guess we should head back to the inn. I wouldn’t mind getting a hot bath,” says Amanda.
“I agree,” said Beatrice. “Tiphanee, care to join us?”
“Oh, I don’t know,” replies Tiphanee unsurely. Amanda coaxes her, saying that it will be fine. Soon, she agrees. “Okay,” she smiled. Then the three of them leave the Council Hall.
