The Grand Hall in Eshtar City is truly an architectural wonder. The sharpness of the hall’s gothic style towers contrasts beautifully with the soft, subtly of the building itself. Majestic statues depicting fearsome dragons roost on the towers, gazing out over the city. The dragons on the four corners rest with their wings folded in, kneeling in silent surveillance while the dragon on the center tower crouched with its magnificent wings spread wide. The gothic architecture continued inside where the hall looked more like one of the great palaces of Eiris. Delegates, Councilmen and other political figures and representatives enter the Grand Hall. The Steamists of Torresdale enter the hall from the right. They proudly displayed their advancement in steam technology. Some wore mechanical devices or pieces of metal strategically placed on various parts of their bodies. Others wore metalized clothing in combination with woven attire. To the left side, the Alchemists enter. They have kept the tradition of their forefathers. The Alchemists’ attire is similar to the Steamists except their clothing bares not a single piece of metal and all of them are wearing top hats with goggles fixed on the brim and gloves inscribed with magic runes. Both parties fill the seats on either side of the main stage. Tensions are obviously high as they stare each other down. They throw dirty glares and obscene gestures at each other. Soon the main doors open. In walk the members of Eshtar’s Council with Leopoldo Knoxville ahead of them. Beatrice then enters, followed by Amanda, Tiphanee and Odetta, who appears to be sober. Both side quiet down once the group enters to hall. The four Councilmen take their respective places in the chairs to either side of the center podium. Beatrice takes the center podium. Amanda and Tiphanee stand to either side of her. Odetta takes her place by her husband’s side.
Beatrice scans the hall. She sees the intense glares being exchanged. She can practically smell the tension in the room. The Alchemists and the Steamists are a bit more worked up than usual. Beatrice fears that just her presence alone may not be enough to quell the intensity. Nevertheless, the meeting must proceed. “I am Beatrice Ashcroft, High Captain and Representative of Arcana Kingdom. This summit between the Alchemists of Arendale and the Steamists of Torresdale shall commence,” she says.
As soon as Beatrice finishes, Leopoldo stands up. “I, Leopoldo Knoxville, Head of the Eshtar Council, along with Council members Barthal Hendrix, Jameson Albright, and Zelda Integra, shall oversee the proceedings of this summit,” he announces.
“May the representatives of the Alchemists and the Streamists approach the stage, please,” said Zelda Integra. Zelda is an older woman with a sharp gaze that tells her years of experience on the Council Board. She merely tolerates the chauvinistic nature of the Steamists and the Alchemists as well as several members of the Eshtar Council. Still, she has no issue showing more of her bust than she should for a woman her age.
The crowd on either side parts to allow their respective representative to step through and make their way to the main stage. For the Steamists, a young woman dressed in a well pressed suit wearing a top hat and carrying a cane stepped up. The suit is form fitting and hugged every curve of her shapely body. The Alchemists representative is also female, however, her outfit is more revealing. She wore a short tan leather skirt, matching shirt that revealed her mid-drift, and leather suspenders. Her thick dreadlocks sat on her head like coiled snakes with a set of googles seemingly holding them in place.
“State your names, please,” said Barthal Hendrix, who is seated on the left end of the bench, dressed in a formal attire complete with petticoat and bowler hat.
“I am Yazmine Ulbech, representative for the Steamists of Torresdale Village,” said the well-dressed woman with dark short hair.
“Alchemist representative Abagail Ulbech, at your service,” she says with flamboyant flare, bowing towards the Eshtar Council in a formal manner. The unnecessary gesture has both Yazmine and Zelda shaking their heads in shame.
Leopoldo chuckles at Abagail’s zeal. “Well then, let us proceed, shall we?” he says kindly. He then looks at Beatrice and asks her to begin.
Beatrice responds with a nod. “Let’s begin with the opening argument,” she says. Sifting through the papers that were left for her on the podium, she finds the topic of the summit. Beatrice sighs in disgust. “Not this again,” she mused in her mind. Sighing again, she tries to keep her poise as she read the topic. “So the topic of this summit is, yet again, upholding tradition versus new innovation,” she says discontentedly.
“Not this again,” Zelda resentfully said.
“I thought the matter was settled the last time,” added Leopoldo.
“Clearly it was not,” replies Barthal.
“Unbelievable,” Beatrice said to herself. She says aloud, “Let’s begin with Yazmine Ulbech, representative for the Steamists.”
“Thank you, High Captain Ashcroft,” Yazmine said respectfully. “As you all know; much has changed since the discovery of geothermal energy below Eshtar City. We are able to harness this energy to have a near constant supply of power for our homes and make the way of life easier for Eshtarians.”
Abagail scoffs, prompting a look from Yazmine. “If by ‘easier’ you mean ‘boring’,” she says with a roll of her eyes.
“You know it is rude to interrupt when someone is talking,” Yazmine reprimanded with a sharp glare.
“Oh you were talking? Because all I heard was ‘blah, blah, blah, screw tradition…blah, blah, make everyone lazy,” Abagail shot back.
Yazmine ignores the retort and resumes her argument. “Getting to the point, I believe that geothermal energy will be highly beneficial for all of the Eshtar region and the future. Thanks to steam technology, we can create new devices to make the life much easier and less troublesome by providing these modern conveniences. Devices that alchemy cannot create.”
“Are you serious?! Alchemy can do everything you just said and more! All those fancy steam-powered devices you make can also be done with scientific magic and with way less effort,” Abagail shot back.
“While it is true that material can be created with alchemy, the science and magic behind such an effort is time consuming when it comes to learning it. With the time it takes to learn and process the complicated equations involved, several of our ‘fancy’ steam-powered devices, as you put it, can be molded, built and placed in the hands of the people much sooner,” Yazmine said, keeping her composure.
“Ugh! This isn’t a market place for you, Yaz!” Abagail snapped.
Yazmine ignores her and continues, “Steam technology can pave the way for further innovation and create more beneficial jobs with better security.”
“Better security?!” Abagail says. “What exactly are you getting at?”
“While alchemy was innovative in its time, it is not perfect and still isn’t to this day. The study is too constricted and comprehending the complexity of formulas and equations can be and is difficult. With new technology, we can skip the material process and create useful everyday items as well as provide near limitless energy. Also, there would less risk of accidents with steam technology.”
Abagail looks at Yazmine, wondering what she meant by that last statement. The answer hits her like lightning. “Yaz, you are not referring to,” she starts.
“Yes, the two brothers,” Yazmine finished.
“Hold on. That is not confirmed and it happened over a century ago,” Abagail protested.
“Nevertheless there have been similar incidents that followed.”
“Oh well, if we’re going that route. How many people have had those steam-powered devices of yours blow up in their face?! Literally!”
“You cannot compare inexperience to ignorance.”
“And the same goes for your end as well, Yaz!”
“Hmph, I beg to differ,” Yazmine says, gently pushing her glasses back up. “And stop calling ‘Yaz’! We’re not kids anymore.” Hearing Abagail call her by the nickname she was given as a child finally has gotten the better of her.
But that doesn’t matter to Abagail who decides to taunt her. “At least when we were kids we had a lot more fun, Yaz,” she mocked.
“I said knock it off, Abby!” Yazmine shot back.
Beatrice shakes her head as Abagail and Yazmine begin fighting like children. Zelda and Barthal drop their face in their hands while Leopoldo simply chuckles at the spectacle.
“Well, there they go again,” says Leopoldo.
“I never seen two sisters argue so much,” Zelda said with a heavy discontented sigh.
“Good thing their mother is not here to see them acting so foolish,” Barthal added.
The Eshtar Council may be taking the dispute between the sisters with tolerable graces. However, Beatrice is not. Her ire grew as Abagail and Yazmine took their dispute to outright name calling. Willow and Beatrice have had disagreements but they usually reconcile easily and never had arguments at this intense scale. Soon, their respective parties started becoming unsettled, yelling and throwing obscenities at each. Beatrice knows that the Council will simply watch and wait for the situation to escalate before summoning the Eshtar Knights. She will not wait that long. The last thing she has come here for is a family feud.
