As a fan of horror movies, I expect to be shocked. To be given joyous jolt in all scary good fun. From Freddy and Jason to the Conjuring, New Line Cinema knows what is needed to make a scary movie. Annabelle: Creation continues the trend of the suspense thriller. The latest in the “Conjuring” franchise, the movie tells the origin of the evil that lives in the body of a child’s doll. Like most thrillers of this type, the story buildup is slow, revealing the good life of a small family that suddenly turns tragic. Rather than accept what has happened, the remaining family members long for their departed loved one. However, what comes back isn’t who they expect. And thus….well, we know what happens next. Annabelle: Creation delivers the mystery and suspense of its predecessors. Watching the film, I found myself waiting with baited breath although I anticipated what will be fall the victims. This didn’t dampen the surprise moments when the evil spirit/demonic being suddenly snatched someone and dragged them kicking and screaming and clawing at the floor in desperation for escape before disappearing into the dark void. Annabelle: Creation is meant to play on the fear of the unknown. Every creak of the floor or whispering wind had you looking for the source of the disturbance. Though I enjoyed it, Annabelle: Creation does fall victim to horror film clichés. Such as disposing of the cursed object knowing full well that it will reappear moments later and the protagonists’ unwavering curiosities. Still, the suspenseful moments, horrified screams and foreboding music still make your heart skip a beat. Annabelle: Creation may not be the scariest film out there but the thrills and chills are no less entertaining. It is scary good fun for those who enjoy the mild heart attack. Just beware of creepy dolls.
