With the departure of Ruben Fleischer, Sony has considered Andy Serkis to direct the sequel film. The actor/film maker confirmer via Twitter that he will be helming he project. Serkis is best known for his amazing motion capture performances as Gollum in Lord of the Rings/Hobbit franchises, Ceaser in Planet of the Apes franchise, Supreme Leader Snoke in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and King Kong. Sony had considered him among Rupert Wyatt and Travis Knight as contenders to replace Fleischer. Filming for Venom 2 will hopefully begin in November. The planned release date is for October 2, 2020.

Venom starred Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, journalist who gains superpowers after being bonded with an alien Symbiote, alongside Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott. Venom was the seventh highest grossing film of 2018 with a box office revenue of over $856 million worldwide. Cletus Cassidy, shown played by Woody Harrelson, was teased at the end of the film, stating that there will be “carnage” when he escapes.
