PlayStation 4 hits an incredible milestone – 100 million units sold worldwide!!

The verdict is in! PlayStation 4 has topped the console charts by selling a whopping 100 million units worldwide as of June 30, 2019. Sony’s Q1 fiscal year 2019 report indicates that 3.2 million units were sold since April 2019, bringing the grand total from 96.8 million units to the 100 million mark. The 3.2 million is up from last quarter (2.7 million units) and matches the same quarter last year. The PlayStation 4 has become the fastest selling console to reach 100 million units in five years and two months since it launched in November 2013. This beats out the PlayStation 2 which reached the same mark in five years and seven months.

Game sales for the PS4 have also risen, up to 42.9 million for the past three months from 40.6 million the same period last year, but this is still lower than the 54.7 million of last quarter. Sony also reported an increase in digital sales which are up by 53%, meaning that more people purchased digital copies over physical copies. Sony predicts that they will sell 15 million units by the end of the fiscal year 2019, which ends in March 2020. This is down from their previous prediction of 16 million. Lack of expected first party sales and anticipation for the upcoming PlayStation 5 may be factors in the expected decline.
