Detective Pikachu to be distributed by Warner Bros, Universal contract ends with Legendary Entertainment!!

Well, it seems that Detective Pikachu will have a new “Pokeball” to live. Warner Bros will be handling distribution of the live action Pokémon film beginning new year. Legendary Entertainment will still be producing the film, however their contract with Universal Pictures will end on December 31. Legendary will move over to Warner Bros once this happens. Warner Bros has already distributed several Pokémon films beginning with “Pokémon: The Movie” in 1999, followed by “Pokémon 2000” and 2001’s “Pokémon 3.”

Detective Pikachu is based on the Nintendo game of the same title and features a talking Pikachu who goes around solving mysteries. Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds has been cast to portray the talkative electric squirrel. Justice Smith (The Get Down) will star as the main character, a teen who teams with Pikachu in order to find his missing father, and Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) will play the “sassy journalist” Lucy. Rob Letterman (Monsters vs Aliens, Shark Tale) will be directing the film with scripts by Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls), and Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy).

Detective Pikachu arrives in theaters May 10, 2019. TOHO will distribute the film in Japan.
