The anime and movie world is in mourning at the passing of Denis Akiyama on Thursday, June 28. He was best known as providing the voice of Iceman/Bobby Drake, Silver Samurai, and Sunfire in the “X-Men Animated Series” and Malachite/Kunzite in the original English version of “Sailor Moon.” He also played Shinji in “Johnny Mnemonic” and a fictional version of game designer Toru Iwatami in the 2015 film “Pixels.” Akiyama has also had roles in “Warehouse 13”, “Resident Evil Afterlife”, “Beyblade”, “Powerstone” and the first “Omnimusha” game.
Denis Akiyama was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on May 28, 1952. He had his first role in the Canadian comedy TV series “Seeing Things.” From there, he has appeared in several Canadian television shows and movies. Akiyama made his American debut in the original “Sailor Moon” series voicing the English version of Malacite, one of four servants of the show’s antagonist Queen Beryl. He has appeared in several other roles over his 30 year career.
Visitations will be held at the Mount Pleasant Funeral Centre in Toronto, Ontario on July 4 at 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and at 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. His funeral will take place on July 5 at 1:00 p.m. A memorial website has been set up for memorial testimonies, photos, and information on Akiyama’s funeral service. Denis Akiyama was 66 years old.
